Dr Faustus - Manchester Royal Exchange 20 September 2010

Dr Faustus is currently showing at the Royal Exchange theatre in Manchester. BDi composer, Richard Hammarton, has composed the music and designed the sound.

Christopher Marlowe's STUNNING and SAVAGE tragedy When Doctor Faustus' desire for power and knowledge leads him to conjure up the demon Mephistopheles, he finds himself offered the ultimate bargain: he will be granted everything he desires for 24 years, but at the end of that time will have to hand his soul over to the devil. So begins a hedonistic journey in time and space as Faustus turns the world into his playground. But wherever he goes the clock ticks down to his final damnation, and he is followed by the shadow of his infernal bargain.

Fantastic reviews below:- www.thepublicreviews.com There is a strong reliance in the production on Mark Jonathan’s lighting design and Richard Hammarton’s sound effects both of which beautifully enhance the eerie and dark atmosphere.

The Guardian Meanwhile, composer Richard Hammarton's terrific soundscape is often more effective than all the flashy visuals.

www.manchestersalon.org.uk The music and sound production are used to great effect from the opening eerie singing and throughout. The voices of the good and bad angel envelop the theatre space with their attempt to persuade the protagonist to their respective ways. From the opening angelic voice filling the library – in which we sit – to a feast of masks, magic, grotesque puppets and a riot of visual effects. The wonderful music of Richard Hammarton's is equally effective in contributing to the experience.

The Independent Evocatively costumed, mainly in period, the production benefits also from Richard Hammarton's spooky surround-sound.
