Jack Kaye - perhaps better known as the frontman of perennial indie favourites The Magic Gang - has returned, two years after the beloved band parted ways, with his debut solo effort ‘Dora’.
Out now on Fascination Street Records, the track marks his first release since 2020, when The Magic Gang’s second album ‘Death Of The Party’ arrived into the world. Since bidding adieu to that chapter of his musical life in 2024 (when the quartet played a run of memorable farewell shows, including one at Camden’s Roundhouse), Jack went through a period of reflection and evolution - including starting a family - before returning to writing.
“I had writer’s block for a long time after the band broke up,” Jack has admitted, speaking about the origins of ‘Dora’. “Wheels were spinning; I was trying to figure out what I was even doing musically. So I decided to take myself out of my own head. I started to write this song, loosely based on a friend’s relationship. Once I got into that storytelling mindset, it became fun again and everything flowed.”
Imbued with the same breezy warmth as his band’s output, but marking a distinct new chapter, ‘Dora’ is just the first instalment of more new music to come from Jack Kaye soon. Check out the video for the single - directed by longtime friend Josh Cray - below.
